Desktop Icon Positions Lost If Windows NT Explorer Restarted

ID: Q155642

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

If Windows NT Explorer stops responding (hangs) and must be restarted using Task Manager or the command-line tool Kill.exe, all of the icons on the desktop revert to their previous positions on the desktop.

CAUSE

The location of icons on the desktop is saved when you log out or shut down Windows NT. If the location of the icons has changed and the changes have not been saved, the previous positions are used.

RESOLUTION

For performance reasons, the locations of icons on the desktop are not continually saved. You can force a save of the existing layout by clicking the desktop and then pressing F5.
