Windows NT Seems to Hang During Boot and Slow Performance

SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows NT version 4.0 on a computer configured with a Quantum XP-32150 SCSI hard disk connected to an Adaptec AHA-1542b SCSI controller, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Slow performance during I/O operations such as hard disk reads and writes.


  • Windows NT seems to stop responding (hang) during the boot process while the SCSI bus times out.



RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, disable synchronous negotiation in the BIOS on the Adaptec SCSI host adapter. Refer to your manufacturer's documentation for information about how to do this.
