Disabling ARAP Service Causes Misleading Macintosh Error Message

ID: Q197052

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

SYMPTOMS

When an Apple Macintosh client tries to dial in to a Windows 2000 server, the client may receive the following error message:

The connection terminated unexpectedly

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Apple Remote Access Protocol (ARAP) has been disabled on the server by the system administrator.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

There are several reasons for the Macintosh client to return this error message, one of which is the disabling of the ARAP dial-in service on the server. Generally, Macintosh clients receive a "Remote access callers are not allowed" message when they attempt to dial in to an Apple Server. In Windows 2000, they may receive a "The connection terminated unexpectedly" error message. Have the administrator verify that the ARAP service has been started on the server.
