No Setup Option to Select Installation Folder

ID: Q197057

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SUMMARY

When you install Windows 2000, you may not receive an option during text-mode Setup to specify the installation folder. When Setup is finished, Windows 2000 is installed in the Winnt folder.

MORE INFORMATION

The default installation folder for Windows 2000 is Winnt. Text-mode Setup does not prompt you to change this default value. The following exceptions apply to the default behavior:

  • If a folder of the same name already exists, you can specify a different folder or you can choose to use the existing folder.

NOTE: If you use the existing folder, all files and folders below the existing folder are deleted.

  • If you start Setup using the Winnt32.exe file the default behavior applies, but you can click Advanced Options to specify a folder. If the specified folder already exists, the folder is used and all files and folders below the existing folder are deleted.

Installation Partition

This information applies only to Windows 2000 Professional:

During the installation of Windows 2000 Professional, the installation partition is automatically chosen for you based on the following criteria:

  • There is enough free space to install the operating system and hold the temporary files.

  • The presence of an existing operating system.

If an existing operating system is detected, Setup moves to the next partition that has enough free space available. Setup continues this process until a valid partition is found. If all valid partitions contain an existing operating system, the partition with the most free space is selected. However, if you started the installation using Winnt32.exe and you enabled the Choose Installation Partition option, text-mode Setup prompts you for the partition to use.

Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, and Windows 2000 Datacenter Server do not follow the behavior listed above. The Setup process always prompts during text mode for the partition to which to install.
