How to Create Setup Boot Disks for Windows 2000

ID: Q197063

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

SUMMARY

The "winnt /OX" and "winnt32 /OX" commands that are used to create Setup boot disks with Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and earlier do not work with Windows 2000.

In Windows 2000, the "winnt32 /OX" command starts Help, giving you more information about Winnt32.exe.

MORE INFORMATION

To create a set of Setup boot disks, run Makeboot.exe from the Bootdisk folder on the Windows 2000 CD-ROM:

  1. Insert the Windows 2000 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.

  2. Click Start, and then click Run.

  3. In the Open box type drive:\bootdisk\makeboot a:, and then press ENTER, where drive is the letter of your CD-ROM drive.

NOTE: You do not have to be running Windows to create the Setup boot disks. For example, you can start your computer with a Windows 98 Startup disk, and then run the Makeboot.exe file from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.
