"Path Too Long" Error Message

SYMPTOMS

Logon scripts, programs, or administrative tasks may generate a "Path too long" error message.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you accidentally log on with a user name that begins with a backslash (\).


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, log off and then log back on with the correct user name.


STATUS

This behavior is by design.

The behavior described above can occur if you accidentally add a backslash to be beginning of your user name when you log on.

This type of error condition is allowed by Windows because the backslash is a separator and gets discarded during logon processing, but is preserved otherwise. Some programs may have difficulty dealing with this condition.
