  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

SUMMARY

Entering your DNS host name under the "Indentification Changes" in Windows 2000 has changed from previous versions of Windows NT. To reduce confusion in Windows 2000, the NetBIOS computer name is prepended to the DNS domain name.

The "DNS name of this computer" indicates that you are entering the fully qualified domain name for the computer, excluding the actual computer name. The computer name is then prepended to the front of the fully qualified domain name to complete the actual network reference for the computer.

MORE INFORMATION

In Windows 2000, the host name is considered to be the actual name of the computer. The NetBIOS name is just a scalable feature to provide backward compatibility for networking and existing applications.
