ID: Q214794

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SUMMARY

The Remote Installation Service (RIS) included with Windows 2000 Server is designed to install Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional clients. This service does not allow Windows 2000 Server to be installed using RIS.

This article describes how to set up a CD-ROM-type installation share and deploy Windows 2000 server using a method similar to an unattended installation.

WARNING: Installing Windows 2000 Server using this method is not supported. If you use this method, test your configuration thoroughly to verify that all components work properly. This is an unsupported use of Windows 2000 Remote Installation Service (RIS). Microsoft makes no warranty, implied or otherwise, that Server or Advanced Server installations will complete correctly.

MORE INFORMATION

  1. Copy the contents of the I386 folder to a network share or local hard disk. This is required because an existing file must be modified.

  2. Using any text editor, open the Txtsetup.sif file in the folder to which you copied the files in step 1.

  3. Locate the [SetupData] section in the file.

  4. Change the "ProductType" value from 1 to 0. Save the file and then quit the text editor.

  5. On the RIS server, run Risetup.exe and select the option to add a new operating system image to the server. When the program prompts you for the source files, point to the location of the Windows 2000 Server files that you copied in step 1.

  6. When you are prompted for a directory name, Win2000.wks may be the default name. Change this to Win2000.srv or any other name.

  7. Follow the rest of the instructions in Risetup.exe. When Risetup.exe is finished, open the Txtsetup.sif file in the folder you used in step 1, and change the "ProductType" value back to 1 and then save and close the file.

When you are finished, you can boot any PXE-enabled PC or with a boot disk and have the option to install Windows 2000 Server. For a list of Net PCs and network adapters supported using this service, please consult the Windows 2000 Hardware Compatibility List.
