Err Msg: No PPP Control Protocols Configured

ID: Q217126

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to connect to a Remote Access Service (RAS) server from a Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) server using the TCP/IP protocol, you may receive the following error message:

An error occurred while connecting the interface. No PPP control protocols configured.

CAUSE

RRAS includes a RAS component that will assign IP addresses for dial-in clients. To assign those addresses, DHCP or a static address pool can be used.

If the RAS component (of RRAS) is configured to use DHCP to assign remote TCP/IP client addresses and there is no DHCP server reachable, RRAS is not able to set up a dial-up connection and will return the above error message.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, in Control Panel, double-click Network and configure the RRAS properties to use a static pool of addresses, for example, address 192.168.1.224, mask 255.255.255.224.
