Removing IPX/SPX, TCP/IP, or NetBEUI Requires Restarting the Computer

ID: Q217891

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

After you remove IPX/SPX, TCP/IP, or NetBEUI, you must reboot the computer.

CAUSE

In Windows 2000, programs communicate with network stacks using file system objects, which are exposed to the program by file handles. File handles can be opened directly using Win32 APIs, or by using wrappers such as sockets (a Winsock API).

When the transport stack is marked as "uninstall," a reboot is the only way to clear these open handles and allow the stack to be completely removed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
