Disabling and Re-enabling Permission Inheritance Does Not Restore ACE State

SYMPTOMS

If you use the Access Control List (ACL) Editor tool to disable permission inheritance and enable the option to remove inherited permissions when prompted, the inherited Access Control Entries (ACEs) are removed from the interface. If, instead of applying the change you re-enable permission inheritance, the previously removed ACLs are not returned in the interface.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the state and contents of the ACL are not maintained by the ACL Editor tool.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, click Cancel to prevent changes from being applied. If you open the ACL Editor tool again, the proper file object security is displayed. You can also click Apply to refresh the interface after the changes are applied to the file object ACL.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
