Unable to Detect Folder Limit on NetWare-Based Server

SYMPTOMS

When you are using the Microsoft Client Services for NetWare (CSNW) or the Novell IntranetWare Client for Windows NT version 4.10 or version 4.11a, Windows Explorer does not report the correct folder size on a NetWare server unless it is "map rooted" to the restricted folder. Because of this, programs may be unable to perform file save operations, possibly resulting in data loss.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because many programs use the older GetDiskFreeSpace() API which requires use of the RootPathName instead of the current folder path. This API truncates the given UNC path to a RootPathName before passing it to the NetWare redirector. When this is performed with a Novell-based server that supports folder-based limitations, exaggerated free space values are generated. Note that issue also exists with the 32-bit Novell client.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, map to the root folder of the restricted folder, or use DFS to mount all the Novell-based volumes under a single drive letter.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
