Group Descriptions Not Updated to Windows 2000 Equivalent Following Upgrade

SYMPTOMS

The built-in group descriptions from prior versions of Windows NT are not changed to that of Windows 2000 default descriptions following an upgrade.


CAUSE

This problem occurs because group descriptions are not upgraded to Windows 2000 group descriptions.


RESOLUTION

If desired, manually change the group descriptions to match those of Windows 2000 defaults as specified below:

  • Account Operators - Members can administer domain user and group accounts.


  • Administrators - Administrators have full access to the computer/domain.


  • Backup Operators - Backup Operators can only use a backup program to back up files and folders on to the computer.


  • Guests - Guests can operate the computer and save documents, but cannot install programs or make potentially damaging changes to the system files and settings.


  • Print Operators - Members can administer domain printers.


  • Replicator - Supports file replication in a domain.


  • Server Operators - Members can administer domain servers.


  • Users - Users can operate the computer and save documents, but cannot install programs or make potentially damaging changes to the system files and settings.


  • Power Users - Power Users can modify the computer and install programs, but cannot read files that belong to other users.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with Windows 2000.

The previous descriptions for built-in group descriptions will be similar, if not identical, to the following:

  • Account Operators - Members can administer domain user and group accounts.


  • Administrators - Members can fully administer the computer/domain.


  • Backup Operators - Members can bypass file security to back up files.


  • Domain Admins - Designated administrators of the domain.


  • Domain Guests - All domain guests.


  • Domain Users - All domain users.


  • Guests - Users granted guest access to the computer/domain.


  • Print Operators - Members can administer domain printers.


  • Replicator - Supports file replication in a domain.


  • Server Operators - Members can administer domain servers.


  • Users - Ordinary users.
