File and Folder Attributes Not Replicated by the File Replication Service

ID: Q221107

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

SUMMARY

The File Replication Service (FRS) is a multi-threaded, multi-master replication engine that replaces the LMREPL service in the 3.X/4.0 versions of Microsoft Windows NT. Windows 2000 domain controllers and servers use FRS to replicate system policy and login scripts for Windows 2000 and down-level clients.

FRS can also replicate content between Windows 2000 servers hosting the same fault-tolerant DFS roots or child node replicas.

This article describes filters that FRS applies to files and folders before replication takes place.

MORE INFORMATION

General Operation

FRS begins the replication process when the NTFS change log detects that a file in a DFS or SYSVOL tree has closed. Changes are held in a 3-second aging cache so that only the last iteration of a file undergoing rapid updates is replicated. This replication latency is analogous to the "Replicator notify pause after modify" registry entry for Active Directory replication. File and folder filters are applied to prevent replication of unwanted files.

File and Folder Filters

FRS does not replicate files or folders with the following attributes:
  • Folders that fall outside the trees managed by FRS. FRS replicates files and folders in SYSVOL by default. The contents of DFS fault-tolerant roots and child replica members are replicated when replication has been enabled in Dfsgui.msc and each level of the namespace is "backed" by more than one Windows 2000 server.

  • Folders with an .obj, .bak, or .tmp extension. Note that file and folder filters can be modified in the Active Directory using a suitable editor such as Ldp.exe (a Resource Kit utility) or Adsiedit.msc.

  • EFS-enabled files and folders. EFS-encrypted files are computer-specific and are excluded from replication.

  • Changes to a file or folder's last access time.

  • Changes to a file or folder's Archive bit.

  • NTFS mount points.
