SUMMARY
The Windows 2000 Directory Services Migration tool (Dsmigrate) replaces the Nwconv.exe tool included with Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.
Where Nwconv.exe migrates bindery-based users, groups, files, and file ACLs to Windows NT SAM, Dsmigrate can accomplish the comprehensive migration of both bindery and NDS into Windows 2000 Active Directory directory services.
Dsmigrate accomplishes non-destructive, across-the-wire migration of NetWare users, groups, files, rights, and container structure. Project and views are used for safe, off-line modeling of objects to be migrated.
Dsmigrate is included with Windows 2000 Server, Advanced Server, and Datacenter Server, and can be installed as a Windows component (it is located under Management and Monitoring Tools). Dsmigrate requires the presence of a NetWare redirector/provider. If one is not present, Dsmigrate installs Gateway Services for NetWare (GSNW). Dsmigrate uses both GSNW and NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol for underlying connectivity to NetWare networks.
MORE INFORMATION
Dsmigrate helps simplify the migration from bindery and NDS to Active Directory directory services. It also allows for targeting individual NDS containers, so you can migrate pieces of an NDS tree at a time.
Dsmigrate does not:
- Migrate existing passwords.
- Pre-import data (structure, existing names, or groups, but does merge with existing names and groups).
- Migrate MAC namespaces.
- Migrate schema extensions.
- Migrate applications (server NLMs or client NAL).
- Migrate desktops (login scripts, protocols, redirectors, printers, and so on).
