Changing NLB Configuration Requires the Computer Be Rebooted

ID: Q221968

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

SYMPTOMS

Multicast/unicast cluster parameter configuration changes in NLB require the computer be rebooted to take effect.

CAUSE

In unicast mode, NLB configures the underlying network adapter driver to switch the station's mac address to the cluster mac address (which is a derivative of the cluster IP address). All current network adapter drivers can only do that during boot when the driver is initialized.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

To configure multicast/unicast NLB settings:

  1. Right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.

  2. Right-click the network connection you need to modify.

  3. Double-click Network Load Balancing.

  4. Click Cluster Parameter.
