Add Printer Wizard Forces HTTP Connections to Windows 2000 Internet Print Servers

ID: Q222078

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you make a connection to a Windows 2000 Internet print server using the "Connect to an Internet Printer" option in the Add Printer Wizard, the port is automatically installed as an HTTP printer port. There is no attempt to test for RPC connectivity to increase the speed on a local connection.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Add Printer Wizard is designed to give Windows 2000 the ability to connect to third-party suppliers of Internet print servers. The Add Printer Wizard connection does not support advanced Internet printing features such as Web Point and Print or speed optimization checking.

RESOLUTION

To use these advanced features, connect to and install the printer from your Web browser by pointing it to the server using the following syntax:

http://servername/printershare
