  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

If you configure your Windows 2000-based computer to use Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to receive an IP address, a BOOTP server sending a DHCPOFFER packet may result in an "access violation" error message similar to:

Services.exe Application error.
The instruction at "0x75de93d7" referenced memory at 0x00000000.
The memory could not be "read".
You then receive the following error message:
System shutdown.
Message:
The system process 'services.exe' terminated unexpectedly with status code -1073741819 The system will now shut...

CAUSE

This behavior is caused by a null value in the Subnet field in the DHCPOFFER packet.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, verify that the DHCP server is configured to send a valid subnet mask.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
