Request for Comments (RFC) 1035 states that only letters, numbers, and hyphens are valid. However, because of the added functionality of dynamic updates, Microsoft DNS allows less stringent naming policies in order to comply with many client naming conventions. When you use an underscore or other special character, the name is updated with Microsoft DNS. You then receive the warning message stating that only Microsoft DNS is a supported method and other DNS servers may not support the registration.
