SUMMARY

The Windows 2000 Directory Services Migration tool (DSMigrate) helps simplify the migration of user objects and files from NetWare (Bindery and NDS) to the Active Directory directory service.

DSMigrate uses projects and views to import NetWare objects into an offline database. Once offline, these objects can be manipulated and configured (migrated) to the Active Directory directory service.

The first step to beginning a migration from NetWare to the Windows 2000 Active Directory directory service is to create a project. Once a project is created, a "View from NetWare" can be created using the Discovery Wizard. While discovering a "View from NetWare," it is possible to select a context that contains the NDS Organization container object (O). The Organization container object (O) is depicted twice on page 2 of the Discovery Wizard. The Organization container object (O) is first depicted at the top of the NDS tree as an (O), and then depicted again as an Organizational Unit (OU) immediately beneath the (O). If, on page 2 of the Discovery Wizard the (OU) that represents the (O) is selected as the context to be discovered, it becomes part of the view that can be manipulated and imported into the Active Directory directory service. In such an instance the (O) appears as an (OU) in the offline view. If the Organization container object (O) is discovered into an offline View, any user objects contained directly in this container are discovered as well. However, user objects contained in this (OU) are not configured (migrated) into the Active Directory directory service if this (OU) is selected as an (OU) to be configured (migrated) to the Active Directory directory service.

MORE INFORMATION

If your Organization container object (O) contains user objects that need to be configured (migrated) to the Active Directory directory service using DSMigrate, it is necessary to move these user objects to another OU (one that is an "OU proper," underneath the actual O). While in offline views, you can move user objects between OUs.
