SYMPTOMS

When you try to start the Performance Logs and Alerts service, you may receive the following Microsoft Management Console error message:

Could not start the Performance Logs and Alerts service on Local Computer. The service did not return an error. This could be an internal service error. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because logs and alerts cannot be started from the Microsoft Management Console snap-in the Computer Management tool when you start the Performance Logs and Alerts service. The Performance Logs and Alerts service does not start when you start your computer, it starts when a log or alert is started.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, start your logs or alerts from the Microsoft Management Console snap-in Performance Logs and Alerts:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools and Performance, and then click Performance Logs and Alerts.

  2. From the Microsoft Management Console snap-in Performance Logs and Alerts you can open Counter Logs, Trace Logs, or Alerts. Note that if no logs or alerts are present, right-click in the right-side pane, point to New, and then create new Log/Alert settings.

  3. Right-click the log or alert, click All Tasks, and then click Start.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
