Error 2321 in Cluster Log Is Informational If It Occurs Only Once

SUMMARY

You may see the following entry in the cluster log whenever an attempt is made by the Distributed File System (DFS) root resource dynamic-link library (DLL) to delete the underlying share:

File Share Sharename: Error removing share 'sharename'. Error 2321.

This occurs whenever the DFS root resource is taken offline. Some operations that cause the resource to be taken offline include moving the group containing the resource or the deletion of the resource.

If you type net helpmsg 2321 at a command prompt you see the following information:

The share must be removed from the Distributed File System before it can be deleted.

The first time this error occurs it is for informational purposes only. It simply means that on the first deletion attempt of the share by the DFS root resource DLL, share manager (Srv) checks DFS to see if the share is DFS-owned. DFS replies "yes," so Srv cannot delete the share. If such an error occurs, the DFS root resource DLL destroys the DFS state information. Then, when the DFS root resource tries again by issuing an API call to Srv, Srv asks DFS whether it owns the share. DFS replies "no" and the share is deleted. If the error appears in the cluster log only once and the operation you performed on the DFS root share is successful, this error code has no major implication and is for informational purposes only.

If the error appears in the cluster log more than once consecutively, it may be a problem. This could mean that the DFS state information is not being removed successfully.

Save the cluster log files on both nodes for analysis and notify your administrator or product support specialist.
