Configuring Different Containers to Hold Organizational Units

SYMPTOMS

In the Active Directory Users and Computers Microsoft Management Console (MMC), it is not possible (by default) to add organizational units to containers.


CAUSE

This issue occurs to provide backward compatibility when domains and enterprises are upgraded.


RESOLUTION

To change this default schema:

  1. Open the Schema MMC with write privileges.


  2. Double-click the organizational Unit class.


  3. Click the Relationship tab, and then add container to the Possible Superior list.


These settings take effect in approximatly five minutes (the default refresh time), when you restart your computer, or by issuing a schemaUpdateNow command to the root DSA-specific Entry (DSE).


STATUS

This behavior is by design.
