"Update Associated Pointer Record" Does Not Work When Reverse Zone Is Missing

ID: Q225564

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you try to update an associated pointer (PTR) record in the properties of an "A" record in a forward zone, the record may not be updated. When this occurs, no error message is displayed.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Windows 2000 does not try to find the reverse zone again. Windows 2000 does generate a warning when you first create the record stating that the reverse zone cannot be found, but does not warn you when you are trying to update the "A" record again.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, create the reverse zone and then manually add the PTR records to the zone, or delete the "A" records and then add them again with the Create Associated PTR Record check box selected.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The Update Associated PTR Record check box in the properties of an "A" record works only when there is a PTR record already in the reverse zone.
