Misleading Error Message If Chkdsk Requires Reboot During Setup

ID: Q226071

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you run Windows 2000 Setup, if Chkdsk.exe repairs a hard disk problem that requires a reboot, you receive the following misleading error message:

Setup has determined that you attempted unsuccessfully to upgrade the Windows NT installation shown.
Setup then deletes the temporary Setup files, copies them all again, and continues.

CAUSE

If Chkdsk finds something wrong with your hard disk, a reboot may be required to repair the problem. The reboot temporarily halts the Setup process. After the reboot, Setup copies all the files again to ensure that all the files are valid. Setup then resumes normally.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
