Exchange Database File Information May Not Be Listed Correctly

ID: Q226132

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

SYMPTOMS

When you view the file size and properties of a Microsoft Exchange Server database file that is located on an NTFS-formatted partition, the file information that is displayed may not reflect the current size, date, or time for the file.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when an Exchange Server service writes a block past the database file's end-of-file (EOF) marker. This process is used to extend the database size.

RESOLUTION

As a workaround to view the proper file information, you can stop and restart the Exchange Server database services (the services for the directory, information store, and/or directory synchronization) to update the information. You can also retrieve the file information programmatically by using the Win32 GetFileInformationByHandle function to query the file system directly.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
