When you press and hold down the CTRL key when you start Windows, the Startup menu is displayed. If you press the F8 key at the Startup menu, you see the Windows 2000 Advanced Option menu, which contains the following item:

Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows 2000 Domain Controllers only.)
Although this option is available in Windows 2000 Professional, it is only intended for use on computers running Windows 2000 Server with Active Directory installed.

If you choose this option in Windows 2000 Professional, you start the computer in Safe mode.
