Sound Does Not Work Using an NEC VersaPro NX Laptop

ID: Q226295

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows 2000 on an NEC VersaPro NX laptop, the built-in sound card does not function.

If you look in Device Manager, you see a resource conflict for the following devices:

  • ES1869 Control Interface.

  • ES1869 Plug and Play AudioDrive.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Windows 2000 does not call the computer's BIOS for the Plug and Play hardware configuration.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, change the BIOS Setup configuration from PnP OS Setup" to Auto, which lets the BIOS automatically assign a conflict free resource to this device. The audio driver works correctly using this configuration in Windows 2000 and in Windows 98. For information about how to configure your BIOS, contact NEC or visit the following Web site:

MORE INFORMATION

The devices with resource conflicts are BIOS enumerated, which means the BIOS is responsible for configuring the hardware settings and reporting it to the operating system.

If you use the PnP OS Setup mode, the operating system is suppose to call into the BIOS to configure the devices. Microsoft Windows 95/98 does call the BIOS for the configuration, so the audio works correctly. Windows 2000 reads the devices' configuration, but does not call the BIOS to set the configuration.
