ID: Q226327

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you administer devices using the Computer Management snap-in, you may receive the following message:

Device Manager is running in read-only mode because you are running it on a remote computer. To uninstall devices or to change device properties or drivers, you must run Device Manager on the computer where you wish to make changes.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you use "localhost" instead of the local computer name. This causes the connection to be treated as a remote connection.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, use the actual computer name or Internet Protocol (IP) address instead of localhost.

MORE INFORMATION

Localhost and local are treated as valid computer names.
