ID: Q226394

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

If you specify a share name of "Pipe" or "Mailslot," the shares appear correctly in the browse list. However, when a client attempts to connect to a share with either of these names, an error message is returned. Any of the following error messages may be returned when a client tries to connect to the Pipe share:

  • Incorrect function

  • Access denied

  • The specified path is invalid

Trying to connect to the Mailslot share may cause a STOP 0x27 error message in Rdbss.sys on a blue screen:
RDR_FILE_SYSTEM (0x0000027)

CAUSE

The Windows 2000 network redirector does not differentiate between these share names and actual named pipes or mailslots.

RESOLUTION

To prevent these problems from occurring, do not create shares with the name "Pipe" or "Mailslot."

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
