Arabic Console Messages Are Displayed as Question Marks

SYMPTOMS

When you try to send console messages in Arabic to a computer that is not configured to use the Arabic language, your message is displayed as question mark characters. Also, if you try to send console messages using non-standard character sets, your message is displayed as invalid characters.


CAUSE

This problem can occur because the Messenger service does not run in the system context (on the receiving side) and is not aware of the locale of the message originator.


RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, do not try to send console messages to a computer that does not use the same character set or language as your computer.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
