Event ID 49 Is Logged After Adding Random Access Memory

SYMPTOMS

When you add random access memory (RAM) to a computer that is configured to create a crash dump (Memory.dmp) file, the size of the Pagefile.sys file does not automatically increase to accommodate the Memory.dmp file. Also, you may receive the following error message in the System Log:

Event id: 49
Source: FTDISK
Description: "Configuring the Page file for crash dump failed. Make sure there is a page file on the boot partition and that is large enough to contain all physical memory."

CAUSE

This behavior occurs to give administrators the flexibility to increase the size of the page file at their discretion.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, use the appropriate method:

Increase the Size of the Pagefile.sys File

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.



2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Performance Options.



3. Under Virtual Memory, click Change.



4. Set the initial size of the page file that exists on the same partition as the operating system to be the amount of physical memory, plus 12 megabytes (MB).

No Longer Want to Save the Memory.dmp File

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.



2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Startup and Recovery.



3. Click to clear the Write debugging information to check box, and then click OK.



4. Restart your computer.

This behavior is by design.

A Memory.dmp file is created when a kernel mode STOP error occurs on a computer that has the "crash dump" feature enabled. If the page file is unable to accommodate a Memory.dmp file, debugging the problem is not possible. The page file is configured for crash dump when your computer starts, and the behavior described earlier in this article is logged when the physical memory on the computer is greater than the size of the Pagefile.sys file.
