ID: Q226469

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

SYMPTOMS

When you try to create a new desktop item that uses the Content Definition File (CDF) format on your active desktop by directly typing the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) path (for example, http://myserver/calendar.cdf), you may receive the following error message:

Active Desktop Item. The control panel is unable to process this Content Definition File (CDF).

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Microsoft Internet Explorer is currently configured to work offline.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, configure Internet Explorer to work online while you add the new desktop item:

  1. Start Internet Explorer.

  2. On the File menu, click Work Offline so there is no check mark displayed next to this item.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

When you create a new desktop item while working offline that does not use the CDF format (for example, http://myserver/webpage.htm or http://myserver/webimage.jpg), Internet Explorer temporarily goes online to download the item and then goes offline again without generating an error message.
