Program Title in Shortcut Has Extended ASCII Characters

SYMPTOMS

When you view the properties for a shortcut to a 16-bit program, your program's title at the top of the Program tab may contain extended American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) characters that appear as pipe (|) characters.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if your shortcut references a 16-bit program that is located in a folder with a very long name.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, you can safely ignore the extended characters, or rename the very long folder name to a shorter name. To rename a folder, right-click it, type the new folder name, and then press ENTER.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

This issue does not effect the functionality of your 16-bit program. An extended character is any ASCII character between 128 and 255. Extended characters (also known as "extended ASCII") can add up to 128 additional characters to the standard ASCII character set, such as accented letters, graphics characters, and special symbols.
