SUMMARY
NetWare Directory Services (NDS) for Windows NT 2.0 is a Novell product that can be installed on a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 server to "redirect" calls to the Window NT Security Account Manager (SAM) database to an NDS server.
When NDS for Windows NT 2.0 is installed on a Windows NT 4.0 server, Microsoft's version of the Samsrv.dll file is replaced with a Novell version that redirects requests to an NDS server instead of the SAM database. The NDS server then handles authentication from data contained in the NDS database.
NDS for Windows NT 2.0 requires the presence of at least one NetWare-based NDS server per Windows NT domain and must be installed on all primary domain controllers (PDCs) and backup domain controllers (BDCs) in all Windows NT domains that will be managed using the NWAdmin tool and NDS.
MORE INFORMATION
NDS for Windows NT can manage only Windows NT 4.0 server operations that operate using calls to the Samsrv.dll file.
In Windows 2000, the SAM database is replaced by Active Directory, which provides significant enhancements in security and directory functionality. Also, the version of the Samsrv.dll file in Windows 2000 is different from the version in Windows NT 4.0 server. The Windows 2000 version of the Samsrv.dll file is used only for a subset of all security operations that are performed in a Windows 2000 environment.
To implement a redirection architecture for Windows 2000 similar to NDS for Windows NT 2.0, it would be necessary to replace all security and directory functionality that Active Directory services provide with analogous functionality in NDS. For reasons stated above, NDS for Windows NT does not function with Windows 2000.
