Multilink Modem Configuration Lost after Windows 2000 Upgrade

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based computer with two modems that are configured to use different phone numbers to establish a Microsoft Remote Access Service (RAS) multilink connection, the modems may be configured to use the same telephone number and the modems may be configured to dial the same phone number. Also, both modems may be configured to use the same communication port.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, configure your modems to use the correct phone number and communications port:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network and Dial-up Connections.



2. Right-click the connection you want to configure to use multiple devices, and then click Properties.



3. On the Options tab, do one of the following:



• If you want Windows 2000 to dial only the first available device, click Dial only first available device in the Multiple devices box.



• If you want Windows 2000 to use all of your devices, click Dial all devices in the Multiple devices box.



• If you want Windows 2000 to dynamically dial and hang up devices as needed, click Dial devices only as needed in the Multiple devices box, and then click Configure.



1. Click the Activity at least box to select the percentage of total line usage for automatic dialing. Click the Duration at least box to select the time delay for automatic dialing. Another line is dialed when connection activity reaches the percentage level for the amount of time that you specify.



2. Click the Activity no more than box to select the percentage of total line usage for automatic hangup. Click the Duration at least box to select the time delay for automatic hangup. A device is disconnected when connection activity decreases to this level for at least the amount of time that you specify.



3. Click OK to complete the automatic dialing and hangup configuration.


NOTE: If you selected Dial devices only as needed, the last multilinked device ignores the automatic hangup setting, and a twenty minute time-out is used for the last device.



4. Click OK to finish.

This behavior is by design.

If you use multiple devices to dial a server that requires callback, then only one of your multilinked devices is called back. This is because only one number is stored in a user account. Therefore, only one device connects and all other devices do not complete the connection, and your connection loses multilink functionality. You can avoid this problem if the multilinked phonebook entry is an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) connection with two channels that have the same phone number.
