Unable to Map Network Drive Using the Servers IP Address

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to map a drive using a computer running Windows 2000, you may receive the following error message:

System error 53 has occurred.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you are trying to map a drive using an IP address for a server running any of the following networking software:

• IBM OS/2 1.3



• Lan Manager 2.2



• Microsoft Net Server 1.11



• Hewlett-Packard Unix Lan Manager X

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the NetBios name of the server to map the drive. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Double-click My Computer, and then click Map Network Drive on the Tools menu.



2. In the Drive box, click the drive letter you want to use.



3. In the Folder box, type \\<server>\<share>, where <server> is the NetBios name of the server to which you want to connect, and <share> is the name of a shared folder on that server.



4. Click Finish.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
