3Com 3C509 Network Adapter Randomly Loses Network Connectivity

SYMPTOMS

When you use a 3Com 3C509 network adapter in your computer, you may experience random loss of network connectivity or the resources assigned to the network adapter may change.


CAUSE

This issue can occur if you configure the 3C509 network adapter to use legacy mode.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, configure the network adapter to use PnP mode. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click System, and then click Device Manager on the Hardware tab.


  3. Double-click Network Adapters to expand the branch.


  4. Right-click your network adapter, and then click Uninstall.


  5. Close Device Manager, and then restart your computer.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows 2000.
