SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade your Packard Bell from Microsoft Windows 98 to Windows 2000, you may receive the following error message when you run the Packard Bell System Credentials (Syscred.exe) tool:

Something attempted to directly access the hard drive which causes the application to function incorrectly.

CAUSE

The Syscred.exe tool is attempting to gain direct access to the computer's hardware to display information about the computer. Windows 2000 does not provide support for programs that query the computer's hardware directly.

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and the double-click System.

  2. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
