Should Not Be Able to Connect SLIP Connection to a PPP Server

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to connect with Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP) to a remote access server (RAS) that is configured to use Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), the Windows 2000 client does not connect and does not inform you of the incorrect configuration.

CAUSE

Although Windows 2000 can only accept incoming RAS connections using PPP, it can be configured to make outgoing connections using either PPP or SLIP.

Windows 2000 should be configured to use SLIP only when the remote access server to which it is attempting to connect is configured to expect SLIP connections. Likewise, Windows 2000 should be configured to use PPP only when the remote access server to which it is attempting to connect is configured to expect PPP connections. Connection attempts do not succeed when made from SLIP clients to PPP servers or from PPP clients to SLIP servers.

Because of a practical limitation of the RasDial API, Windows 2000 does not display a dialog box that informs you that a connection attempt did not succeed because you are attempting to dial a SLIP server using PPP or a PPP server using SLIP.

RESOLUTION

Verify that your Windows 2000 client is configured to use the same protocol (PPP or SLIP) as the server to which it is attempting to connect.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
