Unable to Use Removable Disk with Early NTFS Type

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use a removable-media disk on a computer running Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 or earlier, you may receive the following Dr. Watson error message:

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.
Explorer.exe
Exception: access violation (0xc0000005),
Address: 0x77f91320

If you continue to try to use the disk, you may receive the following error message:

The system cannot find the drive specified.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you try to use a removable-media disk that uses the version of the NTFS file system included with Windows 2000 on a computer running Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 or earlier.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, upgrade your Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3-based computer to Service Pack 4. After you do so, you can use removable-media disks that use the version of the NTFS file system included with Windows 2000.

To work around this issue, format your removable-media disks with the FAT16 file system. You can use FAT16 disks on Windows NT 4.0-based and Windows 2000-based computers.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
