The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade a computer running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with an external modem installed to Windows 2000, two modem drivers may be displayed (the original Windows NT 4.0 modem driver and the new Windows 2000 modem driver).

When you try to use the Windows NT 4.0 modem driver with Remote Access Service (RAS), you may receive an error message stating that the port is already in use.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you install a modem on the computer running Windows NT 4.0 using the driver supplied by the modem manufacturer. During the upgrade, the modem is detected with Plug and Play and the new Windows 2000 modem driver is installed.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
