Users Group Members Can Modify Boot.ini When Installing Windows 2000 on a FAT Partition

SYMPTOMS

When an ordinary user who is a member of the Users group is installing Windows 2000 on a drive using the FAT file system, that user can edit the Boot.ini file and save the changes.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, convert the system partition to the NTFS file system and then secure the root folder.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
