Changing Speaker Configuration Does Not Notify Running DirectSound Programs

SYMPTOMS

When you change the speaker configuration in Advanced properties in the Sounds and Multimedia tool in Control Panel, currently running DirectSound programs are not notified of the change. You must restart currently running DirectSound programs to use the new speaker configuration settings.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
