SYMPTOMS

If your computer dual-boots Windows NT 4.0 or an earlier version of Windows NT and Windows 2000, you can press F8 when you are starting Windows NT 4.0 or earlier and then choose to start in Safe mode. When you do so, you receive no error message and Windows NT starts normally, not in Safe mode.

CAUSE

Windows NT 4.0 and earlier does not have a Safe mode. When you choose to start Windows NT in Safe mode, it starts normally. Safe mode is an option for Windows 2000.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows 2000.
