Unable to Change the Keyboard Layout Settings

ID: Q227770

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

During Setup, you cannot change the keyboard layout/IME settings to any other language unless the "Input language" selected is the default language.

This behavior only occurs if you try to gain access to the keyboard layout/IME setting when you customize locale settings during Setup.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the keyboard layout/IME settings are hard coded in the language of the country in which the Windows 2000 CD was purchased.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem:

  • Purchase, and then install the language-specific version of Windows 2000 of the country with the IME language you want to use.

  • Continue with the invalid language installation and after Setup is complete, change the keyboard layout/IME settings. To do so:

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Keyboard.

    2. Click the Input Locales tab, click the default language in the Input language section, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

When you use Multilingual User interface (MUI) support, Windows 2000 uses the Master Language as it's default. This default setting exists so the administrator can add or remove MUI files in his/her native language.
