ID: Q227802

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade your computer from Microsoft Windows 98 to Windows NT 2000, sound events do not function properly or you may receive the following error message when you configure events in the Sounds And Multimedia tool:

Windows can not find the file C:\Windows\Media\soundfile.wav. Do you want to continue to use this sound event anyway?

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the sound files located in the <drive>:\Windows\Media folder have moved to the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder and the registry entries related to sound event files are not updated to use the new path.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

  • Copy the sound files from the %SystemRoot%\Media folder to the Windows\Media\ folder.

  • Use the Sounds and Multimedia tool to reconfigure the sound events to point to the sound file in the %SystemRoot%\Media folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows 2000.
