Speakers Do Not Work Correctly After Upgrading to Windows 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade your computer from Microsoft Windows 98 to Windows 2000, your speakers may not work correctly.


CAUSE

This issue can occur if you use a speaker selection other than Desktop Stereo Speakers in the "Sounds and Multimedia" tool.

Windows 2000 Setup configures the "Sounds and Multimedia" tool to use Desktop Stereo Speakers, which is the default speaker selection.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, manually configure the speaker configuration in the "Sounds and Multimedia" tool:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click Sounds and Multimedia.


  3. On the Audio tab, click Advanced under Sound Playback.


  4. In the Speaker Setup box, click the speakers you want to use, and then click OK.


  5. Click OK, and then close Control Panel.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows 2000.
