My Documents Folder Not Mapped to Individual User's Profile

ID: Q227867

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade from Microsoft Windows 98 to Windows 2000, the My Documents folder may be mapped to a common C:\My Documents folder instead of a user's specific folder at C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents.

CAUSE

When you upgrade from Windows 98, certain multiple-user profile settings can cause the My Documents folder to be mapped to a common folder.

RESOLUTION

You can change the location of the My Documents shell folder on a per-user basis:

  1. Right-click the My Documents folder on the desktop, and then click Properties.

  2. On the Target tab, click Move.

  3. Click the appropriate folder location for the My Documents folder, click OK, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
