Smart Card Removal Options in Windows 2000

SUMMARY

There are two options that you can enable in Windows 2000 for smart card removal. The first option locks the computer when a smart card is removed. This option lets you take a smart card with you when you leave your desk, keeping the session protected. The second option logs you off the workstation when you remove a smart card.

Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To enable either of these options, set the data value of the ScRemoveOption value in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Value: ScRemoveOption (REG_SZ)

Setting:

0 - No action
1 - Lock workstation
2 - Force logoff
